This week, our colleagues Toine and Anne visited PeelPioneers to discuss the progress of the private-public partnership (PPP) ‘selection, stabilization and processing of food side streams to food applications’. In addition to PeelPioneers, we work in this PPP together with Wageningen Food & Biobased Research (WFBR), Van Rijsingen Ingredients, Evers Special, FTNON, Elea and the Sustainable Food Initiative (SFI).
The focus of the project is the processing (including validation and scaling up) of side streams to new food applications. We are completing the first phase of the project. The relationship is focused on valorization routes for a number of specific side streams. The excellent collaboration between different parties makes it possible to also look for synergy and cohesion between different parties.
In this way we work together in creating value from side streams.
In the next step, a selection of promising routes is made on the basis of a valorization tool that is being developed. Tests will also be carried out on making new products based on the residual flows. We look at the possibilities of using innovative technology. This is the aim of developing new things for processing these residual flows into products.
After discussing progress, it was time for the factory tour. This gave a nice insight into the world of the orange peel. It is thrilling to see what PeelPioneers is doing. We already collaborated with PeelPioneers with the Food from Food project in 2019. It is a beautiful growing young company.
