Food Tech Brainport intends to set up a cluster around algae. This is a very promising crop. They grow wherever there is water, CO2 and light. From all types of microalgae, two sorts are authorized for human consumption by the European Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority: chlorella and spirulina. These varieties are rich in vitamins, minerals and proteins. In addition, algae burden the environment much less than animal protein sources. Therefore, it is a promising ingredient. Possible areas of application are: sustainable proteins, algae oil and fresh spirulina.
